Noah and the Art

Anyone who knows Noah will understand exactly what I mean when I say how astounded we, his parents, continue to be by the relatively sudden obsession with drawing, colouring and writing. Considering the boy could barely be tied down for more than 40 seconds only eight months or so ago, it's staggering how much creative stuff has taken over his little world lately.

It brought more than a few giggles at his first school parents' evening last night as the subject arose. Noah comes out of school on a daily basis clutching reams and reams of paper, some scraps, some whole but all with a special place in his heart. He gets strangely attached to his masterpieces, and it's important to him that he talk me through each one.

Every. Single. Last. One!

One of the first things Noah's teacher asked us last night was whether we had seen that he was one of their "artists of the week" for this week.

She then went on to apologise for the sheer volume that Noah brings home daily, admitting that the teaching assistants have a mini stand-off most days about who is going to roll up all the many pieces of paper ready for him to hand over to me! They've apparently been discussing how our house must be piled high with papers. It really tickled us, not least because it's true! We actually have to have a system in place for how to smuggle the many papers into the recycling without causing heartbreak. The repercussions of throwing away a creation prematurely can be more serious than you may appreciate! I can neither confirm nor deny reports of Daddy rifling through recycling bags in the wind and rain just before the truck arrived early in the morning to take them, purely because a truly precious drawing of a skeleton had made it into the "disposal system" before it had been expelled from Noah's memory, and he was what can only be described as distraught! What a Daddy :)

His teacher also cracked us up when she said she never ever discourages children from spending time at the writing and drawing table. Computers, yes! Writing table, never. But she's this close when it comes to Noah. The child is addicted!

He's currently loving poppies, as you can see. If anyone had told me this time last year that Noah would be as obsessed now with drawing as he was then with being upside down I would not have believed them. It's fascinating and lovely and he just keeps surprising us!
